About This Site

Background

I don’t want visitors to leave Shanghai disappointed. It’s easy to end up at mediocre places and miss what makes the city special, simply because you didn’t know where to look. When friends visited, I made a short PDF of recommendations, which quickly grew as more people came. Eventually, the file wasn’t enough, so I turned it into this website.

Shanghai changes fast. New restaurants, bars, and malls appear almost overnight. This site will always be evolving, but that’s part of the fun. I hope it helps you discover more of the city, and if you uncover a hidden gem yourself, I’d love to hear about it.

How To Use This Site

The site is divided into two main sections for either visitors or people moving to Shanghai to live, because a lot of the information is very different. However, there are also overlaps, so some information is included in both sections. There is also a blog section which is more of a diary of places I encounter from day to day. Some places will be mentioned in the blog but might not be listed in the main site, either because I didn't feel they were good enough, or because I intend to include it but haven't got round to it yet. But hopefully, you can tell just from the blog post if it's somewhere you might like to try.
